LIST OF TOP FIVE AREAS OF CONCERN

A list our group (Friends of the Red Deer River) has compiled for the Alberta Fish and Game Association (fish chair – Darryl Smith) so our two groups can concentrate on and can work on together. These may not end up being the five points of focus these are just a starting point to open a dialogue.

  1. Structured timely enhancement of wild native trout (Bull Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Lake Trout), naturalized (Rainbow and Brown Trout), Mountain Whitefish and grayling populations with wild genetics. It is the quickest, most cost effective, results oriented and safest method for turning a rapidly declining fish population around.
  2. Pick five large deep lakes that will not require aeration and initiate some Brown, Rainbow and Tiger Trout quality trophy lakes for avid trout fisherman in the south-central region of Alberta.
  3. Put an effort forward to try and have Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) look at implementing the Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout Tail water fishery below the Dickson Dam to create a world class fishery.
  4. Try and push (AEP) Federal/Provincial Government into re-establishing the single barbless hook, single hook per lure regulation province wide once more.
  5. Try and push (AEP) into increasing minimum fines for the (“act of illegal retention to $ 2500.00”) and the minimum fine for each fish retained illegally to (“$ 1000.00 per fish retained illegally”). These are just numbers to think about but there must be serious repercussions for this very destructive behaviour.
